The Secrets of Garfield Gulch

by Marshall McClintock

Originally presented January 22, 2009 for the North Slope Historic District

This is a 2009 view looking across Garfield Gulch to N. Tacoma Ave. (through trees) and Annie Wright School (1924) parking lot.

--From 1891 to 1911, a log trestle bridge carried N. Tacoma Ave. across the gulch here.

--From 1888 to 1891, the streetcar went south along N. 6th and then crossed the gulch along N. G.

--The Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club (1901) sits in the gulch. Removal of the bridge in 1911 greatly expanded the club’s area.
