The Secrets of Garfield Gulch by Marshall McClintock Originally presented January 22, 2009 for the North Slope Historic District
This is a picture of Pt. Defiance Streetcar at N. 45th and Pearl. -Allen C. Mason developed Tacoma’s North End. -In 1888, Bennett and he build a streetcar line along Tacoma Ave to Old Town -In 1889, he builds bridges on N. I Street across the Garfield and Buckley Gulches and gives them to city. -These bridges were in place in Dec of 1889 when he puts 240 men to work on N. I building the Pt. Defiance streetcar line . -Construction from 12/16/1889 to 03/01/1890 for $.10 fare approval. Opens on 04/22/1890. -Mason loses streetcar line in the 1893 Depression.
