The Secrets of Garfield Gulch

This is the 1896 Sandborn map of N. J Street between N. 6th (right) and N. 7th (left). N. 7th north of N. J was never built through. The gulch is spanned by fill between log retaining walls for 250 ft.

-House shown to right of gulch (across N. 6th) is 523 N. J built in 1895 by W. Bullard

-Later houses built on north side of street:

--601 N. J in 1950 (apartment extant)

--611 N. J in 1966 (apartment, replaced two 1938 houses like 615 & 617 )

--615 N. J in 1938 (extant)

--617 N. J in 1938 (extant)

--623 N. J in 1905 (extant) Designed by F. Heath on high ground corner with side entrance and back porch to take advantage of view down the gulch.

--701 N. J in 1901 (extant) Designed by A. Russell for Henry Rhodes, it faced the gulch with its side to street.

-Later houses built later on south side of street:

--522 N. J in 1906 (extant)

--602 N. J in 1927 (torn down ~1986), Replaced with apartment 1001 N. 6th 

--608 N. J in 1906 (extant. Lot originally included 602 & 610)

--610 N. J in 1923 (extant)

--612 N. J in 1902 (extant). Designed by A. Russell for George Heller, it faced the gulch with its side to street.
