The Secrets of Garfield Gulch

by Marshall McClintock

Originally presented January 22, 2009 for the North Slope Historic District

This is the home at 623 N. J Street, built in 1905 by F. Heath for Everett York.

Sited very close to the street on a small corner of gulch bank, Heath designed this house to be seen looking up the gulch from N. I street. The porch, French doors and large windows from dining room and parlor at the house’s rear take advantage of view down the gulch of Commencement Bay and Puget Sound. The main door is on the west side of the house (facing 701 N. J), while the kitchen door and porch faced N. J street.
