The Secrets of Garfield Gulch

by Marshall McClintock

Originally presented January 22, 2009 for the North Slope Historic District

The above is from the September 14, 1900 edition of the Tacoma Daily Ledger, p. 5. It discusses the closing of N. Tacoma Ave bridge by the city engineer due to it being unsafe and describes N. K street bridge as just as bad. The trestle bridges were in bad need of repair by 1900s.

A story in the same paper on September 17, 1905 (p. 8) describes the 40 foot fall by a worker forced to cross the closed N. K Street bridge while paving N. K with macadam.

It’s not clear when the N. K Street bridge is removed, but it probably occurs by 1911 when the N. Tacoma Ave bridge is removed.
